New Feature I'd like to see in SecureCRT

Hi, I would really, like to have a DDE feature included into secureCRT.

Could you include a DDE copy/paste facility, so that for example
when you use the mouse to copy from your secureCRT session, you could
then use 'Paste Special" into say .... MS.Excel (for example) .
Each time, the data on your secureCRT session changes, it is reflected
in the MS.Excel container.

This is an extremely useful feature for admins that can build monitoring
tools (for example on *UX systems, using top/vmstat/iostat/sar), that can be dynamically graphed in an Excel sheet.

I am continually having to work using another emulator that has ssh and
dde features.

Looking forward to a reply,

Stef

Hello Stef.

To achieve the kind of interaction you are looking for
between Excel and SecureCRT would require the scripting
interface of SecureCRT to be exposed, which it currently
isn't. I have created an entry for you in our feature
request database. We will post something here should we
release a version of SecureCRT that does expose it's
scripting interface or if we release a new product that will
help you. If you want to be informed via e-mail, please
send a message to support@vandyke.com and reference this
forum thread.

Thank you

thanks for your reply JJH,
I realise (and expected) VanDyke
to repond re 'exposed interface'

I have already in the past ;

1) posted my enquiry to the support email address you listed.

2) I was emailed by VanDyke, with a request to fill out an online survey. I completed the survey (which btw had far too many window frames to
flow through - imho), in this survey, there was also a section to list feature requests.....

I listed my feature request in this online survey.

I never received a 'courtesy' reply back from either (1) or (2) above, so
when I say in my first line 'thanks for your reply' - I mean it.

Also, as a workable compromise between 'feature set' and security:

Vandyke, could give the end user the option of enabling such a DDE
feature in only the "telnet" protocol - seeing as this is clear text anyway.

Look forward to you response.

/Stef

Hello Stef.

I have added your idea about only adding the feature to the
Telnet protocol to the entry I created for you in our
feature request database.

Regarding your other concerns about not receiving a response
to your e-mail to us, I would like to investigate what
happened to your message.

Would you be able to send a message to support@vandyke.com
referencing this forum thread and including your contact
information so that I can look for other messages from your
e-mail address?

E-mail is our primary method of resolving support issues, so
we want to make sure that e-mail isn't getting lost.

Thank you

Also, one more thing please JJH, the SecureCRT online help refers to DDE
being used in conjuction with the Terminal/Web Browser
functionality (ie high lighting a url in a session, then right-clicking
and choosing "Open URL" )

Quote from your manual ;
---------------------------------------
Web browser group

..
...
...
Use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)

Select this option if you want a new browser window created each time you open a URL with SecureCRT. By default, if the designated web browser is already running, the URL will not be opened in a new browser window. Instead, the running browser application will be brought into focus, and the URL will be opened in that window.

..
...
...
==========================================================

Q) How is it that DDE can be used in this feature without opening up the
scripting api ?

(not meaning to be a troublesome, but wanting a better understanding of
the secureCRT product ..)

tia

The DDE option you are referring to in SecureCRT is only
for getting SecureCRT to open a URL in the specified Web
browser a little differently (i.e. using a known DDE call
that Web browsers support).

Have you considered using SecureCRT's scripting capabilities
to populate the Excel spreadsheet?

There is an example script on the following page of our
website that shows how to push data to an Excel spreadsheet:

Thank you

JJH
