Logical Workspaces

Hi,

Apologies if this is a feature already available in SecureCRT that I am not aware of, but this recently occurred to me so I thought I'd share..

If I am working with multiple CLI sessions (routers, switches, firewalls, servers etc.) all from different environments of the company network (e.g. different datacentre sites) on a particular project delivery, is there a way to save these tabs as a single logical workspace? Like a snapshot, and then save as project workspace.

I realise I could build a separate folder & session but these objects would already exist in my hierarchy so that would be unnecessary duplication.

So using existing objects tabbed sessions and grouping them as "Project ABC" under a separate part of the hierarchy. This would help with not having to re-open individual sessions to rebuild the workspace picture if re-work was required and could promote configuration consistency since you wouldn't open the wrong session by accident!

At the close of the project you could delete the logical 'workspace' without deleting the session object from your parent hierarchy.

I think this would be an excellent addition to the product.

Hello "packet46",

I think I understand what you want. If I were to summarize, would this be accurate?
  • You'd like to tell SecureCRT, "Save my current tabs/connections that are open as a 'workspace'". Then, later on, you can close SecureCRT and go home for the day and come back tomorrow and tell SecureCRT, "Please open that workspace I saved!"
  • You'd like to be able to link to (shortcuts!) or otherwise refer to existing sessions, rather than having duplicate sessions created.
If I'm off base, please provide clarification. Otherwise, I've already added feature requests on your behalf, and we'll post here should any of these become available as real-world functionality in SecureCRT.
If others in the forum community want to see support for such "workspaces" added to SecureCRT -- or if you just want to be notified directly if/when such support becomes available -- please send email:
  • To: support@vandyke.com
  • From: your VanDyke Software download account email address (so we can easily make any newer version with this feature available for you to download, should it become available)
  • Subject: Please add support for 'workspaces' in SecureCRT (Forum thread 14386)

In the mean time, if you are ever working on just one main project at a time, there's a feature that has existed in SecureCRT for some time which might help you a bit.
  1. Open SecureCRT's Global Options (Options / Global Options)

  2. Navigate to the Default Session category, then either:

    1. Enable either the Remember and connect to sessions from last use option (for example, if 80% of the time when you open SecureCRT you want it to open with the last set of connections that were open when SecureCRT closed)

      Or...

    2. Enable the Use auto session option and then use the [Add...] button to bring up the Session Manager/picker allowing you to add each session you want to open up when SecureCRT starts.
When you're done with your project, open Global Options and enable the Do not connect automatically on startup option.

Hi Jake,

Thanks for the response. Your translation of my suggestion is correct.

For example, I already have my corporate hierarchy view (tree) built and this is where I manage systems on a daily basis from.

However, if I have a specific project delivery that will take 2-3 days effort, having the ability to open all the tabs I need with their various different connections like SSH, RDP, Telnet (and hopefully one fine day https!), then I could save that particular tab list as a "Project View" and have the ability to re-open all of them simultaneously on a following day (not necessarily the next) to continue the effort.

I am aware of the open previous tabs function. My only concern here would be if I am working on a project delivery for a few hours a day then going back to BAU work during other hours would mean closing and opening of tabs, so having this 'Project View' snapshot would promote consistency and improve usability, I think...

Any update on https as a connection option? A lightweight browser ported into the product would be good. With the majority of systems moving toward HTML5 type interfaces on docker containers being able to connect to an application interface with https through SecureCRT whilst concurrently accessing a root shell via SSH will be such a massive bonus....

Cheers

I can see how it would be helpful for you and others. Still no update yet on HTTP/HTTPS web browser management support in SecureCRT.
