Conversion from Putty to SecureCRT with auth. keys

I have been a long time user of SecureCRT in all my network engineering positions. At my recent job, I have been using putty for all of my SSH work until our SecureCRT purchase went though.

I have a couple jump systems (*NIX based) I use to admin gear remotely. These systems use pub/priv key authentication. Previously I created my key pair with putty's keygen, which generated me a jason-priv.ppk and jason-pub file. In putty when I load the session, I specify it to use the auth key jason-priv.ppk.

Attempting to do this in SecureCRT and only selecting "public key" under the SSH2 Options of the session itself, not globally, yeilds the error:

Could not load public key file
Unsupported format.

Do I have to recreate my key pair via SecureCRT and have the server admin replace my old file?

Thanks,
Jason

Hi jbiel,

Since private key formats vary widely, it is hard to use public/private key pairs generated by different clients.

However, SecureCRT can read the OpenSSH private key format. If the putty keys were generated or exported in the OpenSSH private key format, you should be able to use them with SecureCRT.

I believe puttygen has a conversion tool to export the key as OpenSSH format.

If you perform this conversion, are you able to successfully use the public/private key pair with SecureCRT?

I was able to use the puttygen.exe to convert all my files over and can now successfully log in.

Thanks,
Jason
