SecureCRT Startup with Alternate Config

I have a SecureCRT password set. I would like to use SecureCRT for terminal sessions as well. The current friction is the start up password.


Is it possible to start SecureCRT with an alternate configuration that only has a terminal and no password?

I want to make sure that I have an accurate understanding of your goal and the "friction" that you are describing.

When you said that "the current friction is the start up password", were you maybe referring to a configuration passphrase? If you have configured a configuration passphrase you would be prompted to enter it every time that you start SecureCRT.

What does "terminal session" mean in this context? Are you simply referring to making an SSH2 connection to a server/router/switch ?

What version of SecureCRT are you running and what platform are you running SecureCRT on?

I have found a great solution to my issue.



But first, here is my scenario:
I am running Pop_OS! 20.10. I dislike the default terminal app (in Secure CRT speak: Connection>Protocol>Terminal>Local Shell)
I really like the terminal that SecureCRT provides.
I use Secure CRT for all sorts of connectivity, serial, SSH, telnet, local shell...


Understandably, I password protect my sessions with a configuration passphrase.


The friction is that when I want to use SecureCRT for a Local Shell, I hate putting in the password.


So here is what I did:
I created a new configuration subfolder ~/.vandyke/SecureCRT/ConfigShell/
I did not password protect it.
I created an application shortcut in:
~/.local/share/applications/


And placed this configuration in it:

Comment=SecureCRT special terminal only startup
Terminal=false
Name=SecureCRT-LocalShell
Icon=/usr/share/vandyke/data/securecrt_64.png
Exec=/usr/bin/SecureCRT /F "~/.vandyke/SecureCRT/ConfigShell" /S "Local Shell"

I then added the "App" to my favorites bar. The Local Shell does not ask for a configuration passphrase, but my main session database does ask.
