Dead COM Port Blows Up SecureCRT

If my COM port is not active (ie not connected) I can open up SCRT and get an error message of: Unable to open Serial Port COM5:, The system cannot find the file specified. Note: This is a USB Serial port.

If I click OK, the screen is blank, so far so good.

Now If I hit a key, any key, I get the Microsoft program error thingy. The details of which are: serial.dll ModVer: 5.0.0.781, Offset 00005c7c

and then the program closes.
