Example: Command (Chat) Window Automation

[Update jdev: 08-31-2017] Added example of how to populate the command window using a button on SecureCRT's button bar.

These examples demonstrate how to automate the Command window (formerly known as the "chat window") in SecureCRT 7.2 and newer.
  • Hide/Display/Determine visibility of the Command Window
  • Enable/Disable the option to send commands to all connected sessions
  • Get/Put text into the Command Window
  • Send contents of the Command Window to connected devices
  • Send text to the Command Window using a button on SecureCRT's button bar
Not sure what the command window is?

It used to be called the "chat window" -- historically named because the individual requesting the functionality originally wanted to send multiple lines at once to the poetry bulletin board chat room they were connecting to with SecureCRT at the time. Find out more about the Command (chat) Window by watching the corresponding Command Window Video on the VanDyke Software YouTube Channel.

A few example script files are available below for slightly different purposes.
  • If you want to know how you can populate the command window with a button on SecureCRT's button bar, take a look at the example named UseButtonToPopulateCommandWindow.py.txt

  • If you want a walkthrough experience showing you scripted command window activity step by step, take a look at the example named "Command(Chat)WindowScriptingTutorial(7.2+)".

  • If you are just looking for example code without all the fluff of a walkthrough, take a look at the example named "Command(Chat)WindowScriptingExample(7.2+)".

If you're interested in knowing what the differences are between the two example scripts referenced immediately above, consider downloading both examples and then use a comparison tool to see & visualize the differences between the two examples.
