SecureCRT 8.7 sz keeps freezing?

I moved from SecureCRT 6.2 to 8.7.2. Now my sz transfers freeze sometimes. I have a linux server and often use sz version 0.12.20 to download files. works great. as soon as I upgrade to 8.7.2 I get random freezes during transfer. I have to kill SecureCRT for windows 10, rerun it and do it the same transfer again and it often will work right after.

why is it so awful now? I cannot find any pattern at all. it will work fine for like 10 transfer, then freeze.

Hi kenw232,

We're sorry to hear about this file transfer issue you're experiencing. Can you please share a few more details with me regarding this issue?
  • What connection protocol are you using for these sz transfers?
  • What file types are you attempting to transfer?
  • How large are the files you're attempting to transfer?

Well, in settings for the connection I have:
Terminal: SSH2
File Transfer: None
Authentication: Password
Key exchange: diffie-hellman-group and diffie-hellman

File types are random. Happens with binary files and text. There is simply no pattern. For example I just randomly did:
core(/usr/sbin): sz lvconvert
Starting zmodem transfer. Press Ctrl+C to cancel.
Transferring lvconvert...
8% 167 KB 55 KB/sec 00:00:36 ETA 0 Errors
(it then stopped at 7%, and started crawling super slow to 8% and kind of just sits there).

lvconvert is:
lvconvert: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.32, BuildID[sha1]=bf44234a579144ab255396dda7f75d4fe98458ef, stripped

Sizes are usually larger, because smaller ones make it down in time before it freezes. This lconvert example was 2.2MB.

Again, old SecureCRT was 100% fine.

Hi kenw232,

Thanks for sharing that further information.

We haven't been able to replicate the issue so far, but perhaps that's because our setup's not built the same as yours is. We've been able to transfer 100's of MBs using sz with no issue so far.

Could you also please share with us what specific package on your Linux machine is providing the "sz" tool?

sz version 0.12.20 on CentOS 7

uname -a:
Linux servername 3.10.0-327.18.2.el7.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu May 12 11:03:55 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

maybe its my internet connection then. like I just download a couple PDF's fine, now I get this:

core(/temp): sz "TortLaw.pdf"
rz
Starting zmodem transfer. Press Ctrl+C to cancel.
Transferring TortLaw(McBride).pdf...
5% 351 KB 9 KB/sec 00:11:56 ETA 0 Errors

was at 350KB/second when at 2%, now 9KB/sec and paused/stopped. yet no Errors.

Note I can't even CTRL-C it. I have to kill SecureCRT.

And I just noticed the processes hang around:
26585 0.0 0.0 468 root sz --escape lvconvert
24118 0.0 0.0 2244 root sz --escape TortLaw.pdf

that lconvert was from like 4 hours ago, still there frozen. I've tried --escape and not. And I have to do a kill -9 to kill them, -TERM doesn't even do it.

Hi kenw232,

What we'll need to do at this point is to take a look at a memory dump of SecureCRT when it's hung.

In order to get this process rolling, please send an email to support@vandyke.com with ATTN: Cameron - Forum Thread 53678 in the Subject line and we can continue our communication over email.
