Angry [LOCAL] : Unexpected SOCKS version encountered.

I'm trying to use SecureCRT(7.2) as a SOCKS4 server on a laptop running Win7.

SecureCRT configuration:

I followed the instructions for setting up a SOCKs proxy (https://vandyke.com/support/tips/socksproxy.html)
Name -> Name: L3
Local -> Port: 1090
Remote -> Dynamic Forwarding using Socks 4 or 5 checked.
Also, setup the firewall config. This part works, I'm able to use SSH to other machines using this as a jump host.

Browser Configuration:
Chrome version 32.0.1700.107 m
Manual proxy setup: all types same
127.0.0.1:1090
SOCKS4, also tried SOCKS5 and that gives the same error messages

When I try to browse using this proxy (Trace turned on in the ssh connection), I get the following error messages:
[LOCAL] : Unexpected SOCKS version encountered.
[LOCAL] : RECV[0]: Unknown CHANNEL_REQUEST: keepalive@openssh.com
[LOCAL] : SEND[0]: CHANNEL_FAILURE

Any help and or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

-mike

Thanks for the post Mike. I am sorry to hear of the difficulty you are seeing when trying to forward your browser.

I would like to see if I can reproduce the results you are seeing. What is SecureCRT connecting to?

It is connecting to a Linux host running Centos 5.1.1 and open ssh-4.3p2

Hi Mike,

It seems like this problem may be the result of Chrome not understanding how to use a SOCKS proxy. Here is a command-line example for launching Chrome that might help:
"...\chrome.exe" --proxy-server="socks5://127.0.0.1:1090"
Does this help?

Same error message in the SecureCRT SSH window
[LOCAL] : Unexpected SOCKS version encountered.

Chrome responds with
Unable to load the webpage because the server sent no data.
Error code: ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE

I'm beginning to think that there is a problem with my laptop as others are using the exact same configuration and process as I am and it works for them.

BTW: I get the same errors when using Firefox and IE.

Hi butrym,

It sounds like you are on the right track. If others are able to use the same configuration, then it does seem like a problem in your environment.

You may want to confirm that the configuration is exactly the same.
