Second "quick" log file with SecureCRT

Hello,

I am trying to find out if it is possible to open a second log file for a session. I checked Help and I'm not sure it if can be done. Could anyone help me?

I have logging enabled by default on my sessions so everything is logged into a centralized location and log file names are dynamically generated based on % variables configured in sessions.

I edited Default.mnu to add "Log Session" button to context menu.
So whenever SecureCRT session is open my context menu looks like the one in attachment. It looks like it is a control for the same log file that is specified in the session settings.

I want to be able to use context menu to start a second log file (or you can call it "quick" log file) just to capture some of the session output and save it somewhere else. While the "quick log" is active the session output goes into both log files - log file configured in the session and into "quick log" file.

If you ever worked with Ericsson WinFIOL you understand what I'm talking about. By default it logs everything in a common log folder and you can turn on/off logging into a specific log file whenever you want.

Thank You,
Pavel.

So here is how it works

Hello Pavel,

It is not currently possible to log to two concurrent log files in one session in SecureCRT.

The easiest workaround is probably to enable Receive ASCII... from the Transfer menu. Once the desired output has been saved to the "quick log", you would disable collection of the output by toggling Receive ASCII... again.

This action could also be mapped to a button on the button bar.

If this option does not meet your needs, there are some other workarounds we can explain (example script or copy selected text to a file).

Brenda,

This works really cool . I got it working in the exact way I wanted. The only side effect so far is that I can't set "log printable output only" for this. Other than that it's working fine.

What are the other workarounds?

Copy selected text to a file is may not be a good choice since there is a dependency on number of scroll lines.

Script option sounds interesting. If it can be mapped to a item in a context menu that could be useful.

Thank You!
Pavel.

Great, I am glad to hear the Receive ASCII option (mostly) works for you.

I have added this thread to a feature request in our development database for a Receive ASCII... option to only receive printable ASCII characters. Should a future release of SecureCRT include this feature, notification will be posted here.

If you prefer direct e-mail notification, contact support@vandyke.com and include "Feature Request - Forum Thread #8955" in the subject line.

The scripting workaround I had in mind involves using ReadString. There is an example script attached to this forum post.

Hello Pavel (and others),

We now have an example script for "quick logging", see attached.
