Slow application startup on Windows 7 64bit

Hello everyone,

I've worked with Secure CRT in the past and believe its a great product. I recently installed a shareware version on my Windows 7 64Bit system and noticed that its suffering from major delays during its execution. Most of the times, as I hit the icon to run the program, it may take up to 20-25 seconds to bring up the program and connection manager!

When this happens and I select an entry, it will take an equal amount of time to connect to the selected host, independent of what protocol I am using (e.g SSH or telnet), making the program unusable.

The sessions saved in my profile are around 400 which are categorised amongst 100 folders.

If anyone can provide any help or suggestions to improve the delay, it would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Chris,

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing such a delay in launching SecureCRT and connecting sessions.

Are your sessions stored locally on your machine?

If not, do you see a faster response if the sessions are stored locally?

Todd,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

All sessions are stored locally on my laptop computer.

Some times, SecureCRT will start in a timely manner, but other times (almost everytime) it will take a very long time to open and then connect.

During my research on this issue, I saw there were similar problems when the connection manager contained many sessions - my case, however as I understand, this has been addressed.

Any other suggestions?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the update. If the sessions are stored locally, and you still see the delay, I would like to know the history of your Config folder.

What version of SecureCRT are you using?

Where did you download the version of SecureCRT you are using?

We have not been able to produce any noticeable delay until we have thousands of sessions in hundreds of folders, and this delay is 3 - 5 seconds. We do have fast computers that are not running encrypted hard drives.

What hardware are you using?

Todd,

Thanks once again for the reply.

The software package was downloaded from your website and here are the details of it:

Version 6.5.2 (x64 build 446) - Official Release - March 11, 2010

The laptop running it is a HP Elitebook 8530w with a Dual processor running at 2.8Ghz, 4 Gig ram and Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit. I can guarantee this is not a hardware related issue

When installing secure CRT, I change the folder where the sessions will be stored, to a folder where I have all my data - this enables a quick backup of all data, including sessions from SCRT.

I should note that the existing Session entries were taken from an older version of Secure CRT I had on my Windows XP.

Please let me know if you require further information.

Thank you.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the information. The next step that may help provide insight into your environment would be a Process Monitor log.

You can download Process Monitor from the following location:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896645.aspx
Would you create a Process Monitor log that captures the slow launch and connect, and send that file as a zipped attachment to support@vandyke.com with a subject of Attn: Todd - Forum Thread #5968?

If the file is too large to email, would you send the email and include the size of the zipped Process Monitor log?

Todd,

Thank you for your reply. I'll do it as soon as possible and send you the requested information.

Would it also be possible to obtain a contact name/email to someone in your marketing division? I would like to contact the Marketing manager in regards to a possible review of your software which will be posted on our popular & world-recognised site, Firewall.cx

If so, you can PM me the details.

Many Thanks.

Hello All,

This problem appears to be a result of damage to a Config folder.

Thanks for posting the solution. I had the same problem after my recent up grade from XP to Win7. After backing them up, I deleted the contents in my Config folder (other than KnownHosts and Sessions). It solved my problem and SecureCRT now starts immediately.
