PPPPPP - or request for an update to a FAQ from Jan 2004 Newsletter
PPPPPP
Piss Pour Planning Promotes Poor Performance (I know I quoted it wrong, but thats what happened to me :-) --- So here I am in Chenni India in whats called an internet cafe. A little different than internet cafes in the US :-) I can plug a USB device in and run things off of these computers, but I can't install anything ARGH! Wait you say! Back in January 2004 there was an article on how to put SecureCRT on a USB drive. Of course I was totally smart and prepared for this before leaving the states. Actually I happened to have my USB with SecureCRT 4.x on it so what the heck, bring it with me... So here I am in the cafe... and discovered I left the stick on my desk in California and have the OTHER stick where I was torturing myself trying to get SecureCRT 5.x to do the same thing... but with all the cross referencing between SecureFX an SecureCRT it kept trying to "convert" my setup :-) So I have securecrt with me, but I can't run it (waaaaaaahhhh!!!!) Ok, so hopefully I'll be in bangalore in 48 hours where I can get to a "normal" computer and try messing with this (or download a downrev version, but then I don't have license keys with me... oh the agony). Maybe I'll think of something else on the trainride... like where to find airconditioning. Anyway, ok that was a LONG story to basically ask if someone could possibly update the January 2004 FAQ on USB version to an April 2006 FAQ :-) Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm learning the hard way just how much you need to bring with you and never assume you can get at, install, or do. And they don't conficate USB drives at random airports/trainstations/inspections points throughout the world. They are too small :-) Marcos

Hi Mdella,
Although the Tip does mention SecureCRT4.1, the steps to use 5.0 or 5.1 are identical. There is a note on the Tip that states that this will work in SecureCRT 4.1 or later. Would you prefer if this were mentioned in the first paragraph on the page instead of the instructions themselves?

Tips the same?
Interesting. I spent several hours and was able to do the 4.1 with no problems. I could not for the life of me get SecureFX and SecureCRT on the USB to work together or to not constantly want to "migrate" my config files to something new.
I've both followed all the steps, gone through the various config files by hand to do mods, etc. Its been quite the ordeal. --- Here is a suggestion... Maybe build an installer option for SecureCRT for installing it on a removable device. Its extremely handy tools that typically need to be carried around anyway... Might be a good thing to think of for 5.2 Marcos

Hi Marcos,
It appears from your description that the configuration may still have been in the format for 4.1 and needed to be migrated to 5.x's format. Once that migration is complete, the newly migrated configuration folder can be copied to the USB drive and the shortcuts can be pointed to that new config. As for the suggestion of having an installer to install directly to the USB drive, I think that this would be a nice thing to have. I have created this request in our development database and added your contact information. If this is added to a future version of SecureCRT and SecureFX, we will let you know!

Creating files...
Just so you know. I didn't create the files. I did a "clean installation" on a new machine and took the config files generated from the 5.x installation... They worked fine before the USB conversion, but once on the USB device, consistantly were being "migrated". Always let the process complete only to have it do it again when the program was re-run.
Have you tried following the steps yourself with 5.x and duplicating the effort or are you simply quoting that nothing has changed and I've got my head on backwards? I have tried this more than several ways now and still cannot get a combination to work. I'm testing on fresh boxes, erased USB devices, etc. Its frustrating to no end... Marcos Quote:

Hi Mdella,
I have installed both SecureCRT 5.1 and SecureFX 3.1 on a USB thumbdrive and did not have any issues. I did the installation again when you mentioned that the instructions were missing something for the latest releases but I could not find anything missing. I have seen the migration message come up similar to what you are seeing but only when older sessions were used. I apologize. I assumed that these were older sessions since you mentioned that you had previously use 4.1 on the drive. Are SecureCRT and SecureFX sharing the same configuration folder? If so, the migration wizard may be running try to integrate the configurations. If the applications use individual configuration folders, does the migration wizard still run?
