We have had a number of requests for this and have done some initial investigation. We would like to add this for the next version of SecureCRT. I will post a message when we have something available to try.

Generic not U3 please

Maureen,

I personally find U3 annoying. I use a number of portable apps and do not have U3 installed. I think it would be great if there was a method for making SecureCRT portable outside of U3. I tried using the previously mentioned info in the newsletter but for 5.5 I seem to have an issue as I cannot find a config folder at C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\VanDyke\SecureCRT\Config. Nor can I locate the SSH2.ini file in the SecureCRT install.

Thanks,

Eleavings

I was using it as a stand-alone portable app before I converted it to U3. eleavings, what OS are you using?

If you are using 2k/XP, is there a VanDyke directory in your Application Data folder? If you are using Vista, I believe the location is C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Application Data\VanDyke\SecureCrt\Config\ where %USERNAME% is your user name for your computer.

Hi Eleavings.

If you open your Global Options for SecureCRT to the General
category, you should see a text box that shows you the path
to your Config folder.

Are you able to navigate to that location using Windows
explorer to find what you need?

Thank you

JJH

Sorry for the slow reply. I appreciate your feedback on this topic. One of the things U3 provides applications is a way to support true portability by making it so that the drive letter that the usb drive gets mapped to is irrelevant to the application. This is critical for SecureCRT and SecureFX because there are lots of places in the settings where paths are specified and with non-U3 drives, there's not a way to specify a path that will work when the drive letter changes. With U3, we've implemented substitution parameters that can be used in paths so that it's possible to have everything stored on the U3 drive.

That said, before we added U3 support, many people here were running SecureCRT and/or SecureFX on a usb drive successfully. If you're still having trouble, our support group (support@vandyke.com) would be happy to help you troubleshoot.
